|The Venture Bros. character|
Captain Sunshine (Chuck Scarsdale)
Henchman Zero (deceased)
Desmond was the original Captain Sunshine, a superhero who drew his powers from the sun. He spent the 1960s fighting the supervillain Dragoon. His Wonder Boy was Chuck Scarsdale, whom he trained to become the next Captain Sunshine. Despite still retaining his superpowers, his age has left them relatively diminished to the point he is ineffective in a fight.
Desmond went on to become Chuck's butler when he retired from being a superhero. He was eventually captured by Henchman Zero and forced to fight various Henchman and Sidekicks for survival. It was also revealed that he writes to The Guild frequently about the rights of Henchmen and Sidekicks.
In season 4, Desmond was manipulated by Henchman #1, then going by "Zero", who told him of his plan to give "secondary characters" such as sidekicks and henchmen their due. Desmond accomplished this by masquerading as the Greek God Zeus and "kidnapping" sidekicks, assistants and henchmen such as Ghost Robot, Henchman 21 and Shore Leave, only to discover Zero's actual plan was to force the captured victims to fight in the arena for his amusement, and revenge for 21 leaving him to die. Despite Desmond still retaining his powers, he was no match for the trained Henchman's combat skills, leaving him bloodied and imprisoned along with the other prisoners until they organized a breakout.
Notes and TriviaEdit
- Unlike his successor, Desmond seems more understanding of how The Guild of Calamitous Intent works and what he can do and what he cannot.
- Him passing on the title of "Captain Sunshine" to his "Wonder Boy" is similar to the title of Dread Pirate Roberts from the book The Princess Bride.
- Desmond is heavily modeled on Alfred Pennyworth, the butler to Bruce Wayne (and his superhero alter-ego Batman).
